Sammanfattning

The dental materials of the future must be able to combat the main reasons that current materials fail, which are secondary caries and fracture. In addition, the materials must be easy to use. There are several strategies under development to counteract secondary caries. Bioactive materials with antibacterial additives counteract the formation of biofilm and prevent bacterial growth. It is desirable to develop materials with high resistance to mechanical and biochemical challenges and equal or better mechanical, physical, and chemical properties compared to those of tooth substance. It is paradoxical that hydrophilic tooth substance is replaced with hydrophobic materials. Future materials must be based on new chemistry that takes into account the biological properties of enamel and dentin.
