Sammanfattning
People with intellectual disabilities is an expanding group in the aging population. They face different challenges related to aging compared to the general older population. Previous studies show lack of knowledge amongst staff related to aging in older people with intellectual disabilities.
The aim of this study is to highlight the problems staff experience related to aging in people with intellectual disability living in residential services. Data from four focus group interviews with employees from residential housings in four different municipalities were analysed. Results show staff struggle to identify aging processes in the residents with intellectual disabilities. Staff also express that the services lack structures and systems for personalized care for people with intellectual disability. In addition, they experience the gap between service requirements and the actual resource provided. Finally the study shows that aging people with intelle ctual disabilities don`t get the services needed, which is violation against fundamental human rights and threatens their citizenship.
