Sammanfattning

Dental implants have been used to support protheses for the replacement of missing teeth at the Department of Clinical Dentistry (IKO), University of Bergen since the 1980's on biomechanic and esthetic indications. The most common complication with such implants is peri-implantitis. The main purpose of this study was to investigate whether patients treated for peri-implantitis from 2006 to 2016 at IKO had received a structured and regular maintenance care. Another focus was to explore the association between percentage of relapses and the number of annual visits in supportive periodontal therapy. Electronic searching for the key words «periimplantitis» and «peri-implantitis», in the archive of IKO, identified 308 patient charts. Following a critical review of the chart notes, 228 were excluded resulting in an eligible sample of 80. From the included charts, treatment information was collected. A sub-sample of 59 patients was positive to receive a questionnaire by mail. Forty three questionnaires were returned with signed informed consent form. Information from chart screening and questionnaires were tabulated and analysed. In the 80 patients included, a total of 328 implants were installed, of which 152 were diagnosed with peri-implantitis. The mean time from installation to diagnosis of peri-implantitis was 6.0 years. Half of the patients (50.0%) had followed a maintenance care program after peri-implantitis treatment at IKO, and 39.7% at private clinics. Of all the patients treated for peri-implantitis, 41.3% had experienced relapse of the disease. Smokers showed significantly higher degree of relapse than non-smokers (p = 0.046). Prior to peri-implantitis therapy, 47.5% of the patients had experienced pain related to the diseased implant(s), whereas the percentage following therapy was 20.9. At IKO there is a need for up-dating and standardizing the classification of peri-implant diseases, to critically evaluate the treatment protocol of peri-implantitis, and to structure the maintenance care program following implant installation and peri-implantitis treatment.
