Sammanfattning
Objectives: The dental position is an important part of a person's external characteristics and an important part of the first impression upon meeting other people. Assessment of aesthetic result is also imperative in orthodontic treatment. We therefore wanted to investigate the perception of what was an acceptable dental posistion and to investigate whether there are demographic differences in perception between pupils in upper secondary schools in urban and rural parts of Norway.
Material and methods: A total of 150 pupils from Gol Upper Secondary School (USS) (n = 52), Ski USS (n = 50) and Kuben USS (n = 48) participated in the study. The participants were presented with ten frontal view dental photographs from the Aesthetic Component of the Index of Orthodontic Treatment Need and asked to grade them A-D, where A was the best looking dentition, whereas D was in need of orthodontic treatment, with gradually decreasing aesthetic satisfaction. The participants would then re-grade the photographs, but this time as if they represented their own teeth. Differences between the schools and the two assessments were examined with Oneway Anova test and paired Student's t-test.
Results: There was no significant difference between the participants at the three schools in the first general assessment of dentition. When assessing the need for treatment if the dentition represented the participants own teeth, there was a significant increase in dentitions with indication for treatment amongst participants at Ski USS compared to the other vgs. There was also a significantly increased need for treatment when assessing their own dentition compared with the general assessment in the grouped analysis for all participants. When analysing each school separately, it was only at Ski USS the need for treatment was significantly increased.
Conclusion: There is no difference in the perception of the need of orthodontic treatment between pupils in upper secondary schools in urban parts of Norway compared to pupils in more rural parts. There is, however, a tendency towards being a lower tolerance for less appealing dentition among general studies pupils compared to other students.
