Sammanfattning

The Global Burden of Disease Project (GBD) issues estimations of disease burden for a large number of diseases, including four oral disorders. In total, oral disorders constituted about 3 per cent of the total disease burden in Norway. Although dental caries has been the most prevalent disease both in Norway and globally, the estimations of years lived with disability (YLD) revealed that the burden of caries in a public health perspective is small. Instead, severe tooth loss comprised the largest burden of oral disorders (61%), and especially amongst those older than 50. Periodontal diseases constituted 17 per cent. YLD because of severe tooth loss were highest among women, whilst for periodontal diseases the YLD was highest among men. About 40 per cent of the YLD for oral disorders was in the age group 50-69, and the total YLD for these disorders will continue to increase as the population is aging. The GBD-estimates of YLD for specific diseases provide useful information for targeting of preventive measures.
