Sammanfattning
This essay reflects upon poetic representations inspired by critical feminism to provide data of newly qualified nurses’ early experiences in medical units with critically ill and dying patients. The aim of poetic representations is to come close to new nurses’ emotional response to the encounter with reality in medical units. The use of poetic representations includes an ancient Platonic and Aristotelian discussion about mimesis. However, it may articulate taboo subjects relating to death that health professionals, teachers in nursing education and researchers may be too embarrassed to mention as death connotes decay, shame, and guilt. Nevertheless, the reader of this essay must validate how successful the articulation of taboos is for new nurses, even if this essay suggests that poetic representation could be a possible way of providing a realistic picture of nursing to nursing students.
