Sammanfattning

The purpose of this investigation was to study the dental conditions in residents in homes for aged and nursing homes and to examine to what degree the dental conditions could contribute to an eventual identification. It was also the purpose to study how the residents took care of their teeth and the attitudes toward this. The material consisted of 366 residents in 22 homes. The age varied between 58 to 104 years. A total of 299 (82 %) of the residents had some of their own teeth without or in combination with dentures. Remarkably few had visible caries or remaining roots from decayed teeth. Apparently, the teeth of the residents were well cared for. In most cases, where the residents had their own teeth often with many and characteristic restauration, the teeth could contribute to an eventual identification. 321 (88 %) residents used only toothbrush for cleaning the teeth. We advise more interdental cleaning with toothpicks or other means in addition to fluoride prophylaxis. A total of 315 (86 %) residents did not want more help with the cleaning. Apparently, the staff was reasonably helpful. It was a disagreement between the residents and the staff in how often they saw a dentist and if it was a long time since last visit. However, 162 (44 %) residents meant that it was one year or less since last visit. The Public dental health service could improve the routine so that residents did not fall out of systematic control.
