Sammanfattning
This article presents six areas where several specific innovations are necessary to tackle antibiotic resistance and its serious consequences for human health. These innovation areas are: (1) new antibiotics, (2) improvements in existing antibiotics, (3) optimized use of all kinds of antibiotics (through such new technical tools as rapid diagnostics and changed prescription routines in the healthcare setting), (4) improved availability (including preventing short-term shortages), (5) monitoring and surveillance systems and, last but not least, (6) solutions to prevent infections. The article also discusses the challenges to developing solutions in each innovation area as well as the role of Sweden and Swedish healthcare practitioners in shaping and introducing specific innovations in the areas. We conclude by stressing the importance also of systemic innovation to support the connections between the six innovation areas and collaboration among the various actors and sectors involved.
