Earlier studies show that every sixth female and every thirteenth male patient has experienced abuse in health care. A history of previous abuse increases the risk of experiencing abuse in health care as an adult. We analyze this risk and discuss its causes and consequences for patients and staff. Based on intervention research, we show how health care on a structural and individual level can prevent patients from experiencing abuse, particularly those with a background of abuse. Responsibility for counteracting abuse in health care lies primarily with health care management. Providing staff with necessary resources such
as time, knowledge and tools enables them to prevent patients from being abused. This article describes a few such tools.
