Sammanfattning

The study explores health care professionals’ understandings of end-of-life care provision to migrant patients. 60 professionals were interviewed in eleven focus groups. The analysis shows that the professionals expected interactions with these patients to differ from care interactions with Swedish patients. The following challenges were anticipated: lack of knowledge about anatomy, communication barriers, different ways of expressing feelings and handling pain, high engagement from patients’ families in the care provision. In relation to models for culture competence that aim to teach professionals how to provide care for ethnic and/or cultural minorities, the results raise concerns about whether these models end up reinforcing staff’s feelings of stress and uncertainty since their anticipation of differentness can easily be augmented by these models.
