Sammanfattning
- Allergic reactions are common in the Danish population. They are usually mild type I or type IV allergic reactions, but occasionally, reactions may be more severe, A type I allergy may be associated with anaphylactic shock. Dentists see many patients who report an allergy. The allergy may be directly relevant to dental treatment, such as the rare allergies to latex, chlorhexidine, oral hygiene products and dental materials. In these cases, it can be challenging to avoid
the allergens and dentists may be reluctant to treat patients due to the risk of inducing an anaphylactic shock in the patient. However, an allergy may also indirectly influence the dentists’ work; for example, patients with oral symptoms due to pollen and food allergy may talk to their dentist about this.
Dentists must therefore have an overall knowledge about the etiology and treatment of allergic reactions.
