Sammanfattning
The maxillary sinus is the largest of the paranasal sinuses and has a close anatomical relationship to the maxillary premolars and molars. Thus, diseases of the maxillary sinus may have odontogenic origin. Moreover, prosthetic rehabilitation with dental implants in the posterior part of the maxilla may be
compromised due to pneumatization of the maxillary sinus and reduced vertical height of the alveolar process after tooth loss or congenitally missing teeth. Knowledge of the morphology, physiology and the most common diseases of the maxillary sinus are therefore necessary in conjunction with treatment
planning and placement of implants in the posterior part of the maxilla to ensure a predictable treatment outcome with the least risk of complications.
In the present review, the embryological development, anatomy, physiology and the most common diseases of the maxillary sinus are described together with their treatments.
