Absence from work due to sickness is known to be dependent on many different factors, not only healthrelated but also involving interaction between other aspects of a person's life situation, such as job demands, private-life requirements, the social insurance system regulations and the labour-market conditions prevailing at a specific time. The primary aim of the study was to analyse similarities and differences between repeated spells of short-term sickleave and long-term absence through sickness in relation to variables representing certain social circumstances and aspects of the work situation.
