Sammanfattning

The Swedish reception program for asylum seekers is centered around state-run refugee camps. To be able to describe the structure and content of the health care service offered to asylum seekers, a semi-structured questionnaire was sent to all health units in refugee camps in Sweden in May 1995. The camp health units are built around full-time nurses who offer a service similar to that of district nurses in Swedish public primary care. According to guidelines given by the Swedish National Board of Health and Social Welfare the health examination serves two purposes: to discover urgent needs of medical and psychiatric care, to discover needs for prevention of communicable disease.
