Sammanfattning
ARE WOMENS HEARTS TAKEN
SERIOUSLY ?
The gender perspective is more
or less absent in cardiac research,
both in medicine and nursing.
Mostly men are included in
the studies, and the results are
assumed to be applicable to
women as well as to men. When
gender is invisible, the loosers
are those who are not in focus for
the research. Based on a qualitative
study of women`s illness
experiences with myocardial
infarction (MI) this article will
present different aspects of
women`s illness experiences and
actions when they suffer a MI,
and how they experience the meeting
with the healthcare system.
Seven women with MI were interviewed
while in hospital, and
then two-three months later in
their homes. These women had
previously never considered MI
as a threat to their health, though
hereditary tendency and other
risk factors were strongly present.
They misintepreted the symptoms
and waited up to 48 hours before
they contacted professionel help.
They were more concerned about
the wellbeing of their families
than their own healthproblems.
Five of these seven women experienced
that their symptoms were
not taken seriously by the professionals,
which led to an extended
delay of medical treatment.
