Sammanfattning

A construct of self-care ability that is closely related to Pörn's theory of health and adaptedness has earlier been formulated and used in the construction of a scale that measures perceived self-care ability among elderly people, i.e. ability to maintain, restore or improve health and well-being. The aim of this study was to investigate the internal structure of the Self-care Ability Scale for the Elderly (SASE) and its relation to health by means of secondary analysis. Data from a random sample of 125 elderly individuals, who had answered a questionnaire for an earlier study, were analyzed by means of confirmatory factor analysis. The results corroborated earlier stipulations about the construct of self-care ability and its close connection to health. Construct validity of the SASE was also supported.
