Sammanfattning
The purpose of this study was to
collect empirical data on the ethical
problems nurses and doctors
meet in high technology units. A
qualitative comparative analysis
was done after about 60 hours of
field observations on a neurosurgical
post operative unit at one of
Norway’s university hospitals.
Eleven nurses were formally
interviewed along with five doctors.
Data were analyzed using
grounded theory as described by
Glaser and Strauss and Glaser.
Data analyses generated a central
theme of delayed clarification
while awaiting. The ethical and
clinical interactions and decisions
are complex and deal with
end of life questions, equal and
dignified treatment, treating the
individual versus the common
good, and asking for organ donations.
Ethical dilemmas around
lack of resources in terms of more
and better-qualified nurses and
more patient beds were overriding.
As one solution to this
dilemma the providers in leadership
positions discharged patients
to the next treatment level.
