Sammanfattning
The aim of the study was to analyse
ward managers’working
situation. Information was collected
with the help of a questionnaire
and a five-day diary to 21
ward managers in a small hospital.
By writing diary you will
know what ward nurses really do,
their working situation. The
results are presented under two
headings: work goals and work
content. Generally, the most
important goals among managers
were to develop the staff’s competence
and the working environment.
The respondents indicated
that the amount of work, responsibilities
and demands from the
hospital management has increased.
They spent a lot of time
recruiting staff. Many of the ward
managers told they have no time
to be «nurses», i.e., to take part
in nursing care. To cope with the
increasing amount of work they
have to abandon the nursing role
and enter an administrative role.
This change may be a problem
since managers are supposed to
be responsible for the nursing
care. The most demanding leadership
tasks were to organise,
administrate and to solve conflicts.
The diary notes differ from
what ward nurses think they do
according to the questionnaire.
