Sammanfattning
BACKGROUND: In this study we
investigated conversation groups
as a complement to ordinary physical
rehabilitation. This type of
treatment has earlier been shown
beneficial in younger patients.
METHOD: 17 stroke patients aged
65 years or older were included
constituting two male groups and
two mixed groups. Each group met
1,5 hour a week during ten weeks
together with a psychologist and a
doctor. The patients led the meetings
supported by the professionals.
The functional status and
quality of life of the patients were
assessed by Katz ADL-index and
Short-Form-36. The psychologists
made semi-structured interviews
after the intervention.
RESULTS: Immediately after the
intervention social role function
and social function had improved
while mental health was impaired.
The group processes developed
faster in male groups than in
mixed groups. The stroke profile
of the patients had an impact on
the group processes. The ADLfunction
improved in almost half
of the patients.
CONCLUSION: Conversationgroups
as above may be a complementary
treatment form in the
rehabilitation of elderly post
stroke patients with positive effect
on quality of life and ADL. The
prerequisites of this concept must
be a structure in time and form of
the groups together with professionally
supportive tutors.
