Protein restriction leads to reduced accumulation of waste products and fewer uremic symptoms. The effect on the progressive decline in renal function in chronic renal failure is debated. We reviewed the only four trials investigating the issue with the necessary reliable methodology and conclude that dietary protein restriction has no major effect on the rate of the renal function decline. If there is an effect, the possible reduction in GFR decline amounts to less than 0.5 mL/min/ year.
