Sammanfattning
An increase of the incidence of pertussis has been reported worldwide and might be explained by factors, such as rapidly waning immunity, more sensitive diagnostic methods, gene changes in the circulating bacterial strains, and atypical presentation of pertussis cases. Strategies to reduce the burden of pertussis might be booster vaccination of selected population groups, early diagnosis, and prompt antibiotic intervention. Furthermore, increased awareness of atypical cases, and surveillance of antigen changes in the bacterial strains might be a benefit.
