Sammanfattning
Introduction: The incidence of gonorrhoeae and the resistance of ciprofloxacin are rising in Denmark. The purpose of this study was to describe the diagnosis and treatment of gonorrhoeae in Copenhagen and Frederiksberg, and to identify a potential undiagnosed or untreated reservoir of infection. Material and methods: During a one-year period, data from patients with gonorrhoeae were collected from the department of clinical microbiology, from hospital files, and from questionnaires sent to general practitioners. Results: Gonorrhoeae was diagnosed in 207 patients. 48% were handled diagnostically correct. Data regarding antibiotic treatment were available for 171 patients. 87% were treated with antibiotics according to sensitivity testing. Fourteen patients infected with strains that were resistant to both penicillin and ciprofloxacin, were all treated with ceftriaxone at the local clinic of sexually transmitted diseases. Discussion: The number of patients cultured not only from urethra and cervix, but also from rectum and pharynx was higher than previously reported. Different treatments were reported, but the majority of patients were treated with antibiotics in sufficient dosages and according to sensitivity testing. Control cultures after treatment with ciprofloxacin are strongly recommended because of high resistance to the drug. Among the patients investigated for gonorrhoeae in general practice an undiagnosed reservoir was estimated to constitute less than 0.3%.
