Sammanfattning

Introduction: The aim of the study was training in six obstetrical skills: vaginal delivery of breech presentations, shoulder dystocia, delivery by vacuum extraction, amnion infusion, foetal blood sampling and handling of postpartum haemorrhage, and evaluation of the effect of the training programme. Materials and methods: Fourty-four doctors participated. The registrants performed self-assessment of confidence before and after training. The statistical method used was the Mann-Whitney test. Results: The scores for vaginal delivery of breech presentations, shoulder dystocia, amnion infusion and postpartum haemorrhage after training were significantly higher than before training but were not significantly higher for delivery by vacuum extraction and foetal blood sampling. Among the participants, 84% have needed obstetric skills training during their previous clinical work. Discussion: For skills such as vaginal delivery of breech presentations, shoulder dystocia and amnion infusion, the scores before training were low and appeared not to be related to the number of months the registrars had been working in the speciality. Such skills as delivery by vacuum extraction, foetal blood sampling and postpartum haemorrhage scored high before training and appeared to have been learned over time, as the score increased with the number of months a participant had been working in the speciality. The low scores for amnion infusion appeared to be a result of the lack of implementation of the procedure. The skill of amnion infusion was a suitable subject for skills training. The use of self-assessment is discussed.
