Sammanfattning

Introduction: Children and adolescents with attention deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) are increasingly being treated with stimulants. In this article we describe the results from an examination of the literature and the subsequent clinical implementation. Our purpose was to optimise the medical treatment. Materials and methods: After examining the literature, we established clinical guidelines for treatment with stimulants. Included were 38 patients for whom medical treatment had already been established and 24 patients who commenced treatment during the project. We registered, among other factors, parameters, time between controls and efficacy of treatment. Results: We compared the results reported in the examined literature with our treatment. We found that a more systematic follow-up of the medical treatment led to a better treatment outcome. Discussion: By examining the literature, we found that treatment with stimulants was more effective than behavioural therapy and almost as effective as the combination of the two. We also found that by following the clinical guidelines, a better and more effective treatment could be provided. Finally, we found that the more systematic the treatment offered, the better our patients responded.
