Sammanfattning
Introduction: Our purpose was to describe the scientific production of Ph.D. candidates in the years after obtaining the Ph.D. degree. Materials and methods: Doctors gaining a Ph.D. from the Medical Faculty of Aarhus University in the years 1993 to 1998 were included in a bibliometric study of their scientific production during a five-year period after obtaining the Ph.D. degree. The scientific production was identified using PubMed searches and evaluated using the Impact Factor of the journal of publication. Results: 92% of the candidates published in the years after gaining the Ph.D. degree, and 78% published as first author. A trend was found toward an increasing proportion of Ph.D. candidates without a first authorship more than two years after the Ph.D. degree. Women produced significantly fewer publications than men. The quality of the publications, evaluated by using the Impact Factor, was 2.6±2.5. No significant difference in the Impact Factor was found between women and men's publications. Discussion: The majority of Ph.D. candidates continued to publish their scientific research in the years after obtaining the degree. The quality was higher than the international average. In conclusion, the purpose of the Ph.D. education - that is, to give the candidates the tools to continue scientific research after completing the degree - was fulfilled.
