Sammanfattning
Introduction: This study was carried out to assess the current state of urological laparoscopy in Denmark and to evaluate surgeons' ranks and their level of training and education. Materials and methods: A questionnaire was mailed to 50 surgical or urological departments in which urological operations were performed. Data concerning the types of laparoscopic operations, the start time of the laparoscopic procedure and the ranks of the surgeons were recorded. Results: The response rate was 100%. Twenty-four (48%) of 50 departments performed laparoscopies. The most frequent procedures were exploration for abdominal testis (34%), varicocelectomy (28%) and diagnostic laparoscopy (26%). Major procedures such as benign and malignant nephrectomy were performed in a limited percentage of departments (10% and 6%, respectively). It was mainly consultants who performed the procedures. Most of the surgeons had been trained in Denmark, but a number of them (30%) had participated in international laparoscopic courses. Discussion: Laparoscopic urological procedures in Denmark are in their initial phase, and only exploration for abdominal testis, varicocelectomy and diagnostic laparoscopy were performed in great numbers. Currently, only a few centers perform a wide variety of urological laparoscopic procedures. It is essential to involve young urologists in performing these procedures.
