Sammanfattning
Atrial fibrillation (AF) is the most common tachyarrhythmia. In approximately 95% of patients with AF, the initiating foci are localized to the pulmonary veins, where impulses initiate reentry into the pulmonary veins with subsequent spreading to the atria. Atrial remodelling contributes to the maintenance of AF. During recent years, various treatment modalities for AF have been developed, the latest being pulmonary vein isolation with catheter ablation. The treatment is successful in about 75% of cases, with a small risk of major complications. The treatment must be regarded as the best alternative to medical therapy for patients with symptomatic AF.
