Sammanfattning

The recently published trials »The Atrial Fibrillation Follow-up Investigation of Rhythm Management« (AFFIRM) and »Rate Control vs. Electrical Cardioversion for Persistent Atrial Fibrillation« (RACE) tested whether patients with atrial fibrillation (AF) benefit more from a treatment strategy that aims to restore and maintain sinus rhythm than from a strategy that allows for AF to persist while controlling the ventricular rate. No benefit from the rhythm control strategy was demonstrated by either of the studies. These findings indicate that repeated cardioversions and the use of anti-arrhythmic therapy should be reserved for patients with highly symptomatic AF.
