Sammanfattning

The aim of the present study was to investigate parent reactions and how they coped with the daily challenges presented by diabetes type 1 (IDDM). Two themes, regarding family processes and insulin-dependent diabetes, can be distinguished in the literature. Some contributions describe how the family may influence the adjustment and metabolic control of the diabetic child or adolescent. Other investigations considers the impact of the youngster`s diabetes on the relationship between parents, the relationship between parent and child and overall aspects of family functioning, such as coping and problem solving. Therefore, family factors play a significant role in how adolescents cope with diabetes. A qualitative method was used. The sample consists of three couple of parents and one single mother. A semi-structured interview guide was used, and the interviews were carried out in the parents` homes. Data were analysed using the procedure described by Glaser & Strauss and Kvale. The results showed that issues such as care and control, family organisation, similarity to others, interaction and support, help from professionals, evolved from data. The study suggests that health professionals and social workers need to know more about the issues described in this study.
