Sammanfattning

Introduction: Accident analysis is widely used in high-risk industries such as the aviation and nuclear industries. In Denmark, hospitals are working with accident analysis, and recently the Danish Parliament issued a law obliging hospital staff to report accidents occurring in hospitals. This article investigates general practitioners' attitudes toward reporting and learning from accidents in general practice. Materials and methods: In the autumn of 2002, we conducted three focus group interviews with 17 GPs. The focus group interviews were transcribed and analysed both deductively and inductively. Results: Among the GPs it was broadly recognized that learning from accidents would have a positive impact on quality enhancement and the GPs' working environment. The basic condition articulated by the GPs was that the purpose of such reporting would be only to enhance quality. Discussion: Our study showed that a systematic reporting system of accidents needs to be implemented, with care taken to assure GPs that the information will be used solely to enhance quality.
