Sammanfattning

The new curriculum in postgraduate medical training is outcome-based, and trainees are expected to be active, self-directed learners. Educational supervisors (ES) are essential. There is evidence that clinical supervision has a positive effect on patients' outcome. Though supervision is considered important and effective, there is inadequate coverage and frequency. Several aspects are included in the role of the ES. Aside from clinical supervision and role modelling, the ES must facilitate learning. Thus, in training courses for educational supervisors, principles of "how adults learn" and "how to help adults learn" must be part of the curriculum.
