The clinical competence of practising surgeons is a subject of growing public concern. Many factors influence patient outcome after an operation; however, the surgeon's technical skills are crucial. The present paper aims to provide an overview of the available methods of assessment of surgeons' technical competence and point out the potential beneficial effects of such assessment on training and safe practice. Clinical studies have shown that objective assessment of surgical skills is possible and that reliable and valid methods of doing so are available. Future work should aim to implement evaluation programmes as an integrated part of surgical training and demonstrate the impact of the assessment process on the quality of surgeons' education.
