Sammanfattning
Introduction: The aim of the study was to look at the results of foot-care in the primary sector. From 1982 podiatry for diabetic patients has been entitled to a subsidy of 60% after prescription by a general practitioner or a hospital. Material and methods: Questionnaire examination in 15 foot-clinics including 40 podiatrists during a three-month-period in 2002. A total of 1802 diabetic patients were examined. All the patients were at risk of foot ulceration. Results: The treatment period varied from 1-31 years, the number of treatments per year varied from 3-12. A number of 64% had been referred by a general practitioner and 36% by a hospital department. The results of the examination showed that 253 foot ulcers occurred during the treatment period, 212 foot ulcers healed (84%). Discussion: Most diabetic patients can remain free of ulceration by prophylactic treatment in the primary sector. When foot ulcers occur referral should be made without delay to a multidisciplinary diabetes team. The state support has proved cost-effective. The number of major amputations has been reduced. The costs are < 1000 DKK/patient/year.
