Sammanfattning
The aim of this study is to analyse
how nurses participate in a vicarious
way for patients to contribute
to a deeper understanding of
this concept in a nursing context.
The vicarious concept is closely
attached to the Christian faith in
Christ Vicarious. In this study the
concept is analysed in a theological
perspective. It does not seem,
that this perspective is directly
useful in nursing practice, since
the nurse is not able to carry the
burdens of the patients; but it
appears sensible, that the nurse
through vicarious practice is contributing
to making the way
easier for the patient.
Three categories of vicarious
practice are described: temporary
place, releasing and solidarity.
Temporary place indicates,
that the nurse is available as a
substitute for the patient, who
cannot take care of their own
needs for a period of time. Releasing
indicates that the nurse,
through deep engagement, follows
a patient on their way to
being self sufficient. Solidarity
indicates that the nurse in a kind
of advocacy is supporting the
patient, and speaks for the patient
who is too weak to express their
interests or to defend themself.
