Sammanfattning
Second-generation antipsychotics (SGAs) have high efficacy and cause few extrapyramidal side effects. Recent research, however, indicates that SGAs increase the risk of type 2 diabetes and diabetic ketoacidosis, particularly for patients treated with clozapine and olanzapine. Literature is reviewed and recommendations are given for monitoring schizophrenic patients treated with SGAs.
