Sammanfattning

Introduction: Our aim was to investigate which examinations women with urinary incontinence and a pad licence had undergone in the municipality of Ikast, Denmark. Materials and methods: All women with a pad licence in the municipality of Ikast, Denmark, received a questionnaire regarding the character and extent of the incontinence. Furthermore, each patient's records from her general practitioner were reviewed to determine which examinations and therapies had been carried out before the pad licence was issued. Results: A total of 310 questionnaires were sent out, and 188 (61%) were returned. Of these, 29 questionnaires were excluded from the investigation due to missing data or non-acceptance of participation in the study. Twenty-three percent had had a gynecologic examination as well as a urinanalysis performed during the two years immediately before the pad licence was issued. For individual teams of general practitioners, this figure ranged from 6 to 58 percent. Nearly half of the women had not had any treatment before the pad licence was issued. Thirty-eight percent of the women were significantly bothered by their incontinence; of these, only half had been examined by gynecologic examination and urine test. Fifty-four percent of all women below the age of 80 had not had a medical review in accordance with the guidelines given by the municipally itself. Discussion: Only a limited group of women needing a pad licence had been examined and possibly treated in accordance with common guidelines given by the relevant specialists' societies. It is suggested that a medical examination should be mandatory before a pad licence is issued. Furthermore, the licence should be re-evaluated regularly.
