Sammanfattning

Introduction: The aim of this audit was to determine whether pregnant women at risk of having chronic hepatitis B were screened and whether children born to women with chronic hepatitis B were vaccinated according to the Danish National Board of Health's recommendations, in Copenhagen County. Materials and methods: From January 2001 the records of pregnant women at risk of having chronic hepatitis B and who had delivered at one of the three Copenhagen County hospitals were examined to see whether the women had been tested for hepatitis B surface antigen (HbsAg). The birth records of children born in 2000 and 2001 to women known to have been HbsAg-positive in 2002 were examined, and questionnaires were sent to each woman's general practitioner to see whether the children had been vaccinated against hepatitis B, in accordance with the recommendations of the Danish National Board of Health. Results: From the records, 78 cases were identified in which information about the pregnant woman's risk status should have led to screening for chronic hepatits B. In 40% of the cases, no information were given as to whether screening had been carried out. Some of the women had been screened during previous pregnancies. Of those who were considered insufficiently screened, 56% were not screened in accordance with the recommendations. Two of 20 children were not immunized. Information about vaccination and documentation of the vaccination procedures carried out in the hospital were insufficient. Discussion: The procedures for screening pregnant women at risk of having chronic hepatitis B were insufficient in Copenhagen County. Information about vaccination and documentation of the vaccination procedures carried out in the hospital need to be improved. Several initiatives have been undertaken to improve the procedures. In addition, we recommend that all pregnant women be tested for HBsAg.
