Sammanfattning
Exposure to solar ultraviolet radiation remains the major environmental risk factor for malignant melanoma. An intermittent pattern of sun exposure, such as during outdoor recreation and sunbathing vacations, as well as episodes of sunburn, which is an indicator of excessive exposure to the sun of unprotected skin, are associated with the risk of melanoma. Former studies have emphasized childhood and youth as a critical period of sun exposure. Most of the studies have been performed as case-control studies. Recently, a cohort study covering a period of 10 years has shown a statistically significantly increased risk of melanoma in younger women who attend indoor tanning devices (solariums) more than once a month. Legislation has been proposed in the USA and Europe to regulate minors' access to tanning beds. Preventive measures to reduce the rising frequency of melanoma should include regulation of minors' use of tanning beds as well as avoidance of exposure of unprotected skin to sunlight.
