Sammanfattning
Chronic illness requires complex
self-care decisions and actions.
Self-care in chronic illness could
be described as health related
activities required to live an everyday
life with a disease. This
study tried to describe conceptions
of self-care among persons
with chronic renal disease. Qualitative
interviews were used. The
result fell into five themes: Selfcare
enables increased quality of
life, Self-care can be a burden,
Self-care and everyday life adjust
to each other, Self-care is linked
to attitudes and functions of
health care staff and Self-care as
a personal competence. Optimal
self-care emerged as dependent
on individual adjustment and everyday
life conditions, a patient
empowerment attitude from and a
good relation to health care staff.
Specific skills and self-care competence
seemed to develop over
time and with experience. It was
concluded that quality of life and
health experience might be affected
by self-care engagement and
that one can have self-care ability,
but yet, of different reasons,
not be willing to take responsibility
for one’s own treatment. It
was also concluded that good
self-care in chronic illness is due
to patient empowerment, and
must be related to everyday life
and individual conditions.
