Sammanfattning
Status epilepticus (SE) is defined as a condition in which epileptic seizures continue for 30 minutes or more or are repeated without recovery of consciousness between the seizures. Clinically, the most important types of SE are generalized tonic clonic SE, simple partial SE, complex partial SE and absence status. The incidence of SE is 50 per 100,000 per year, and the mortality rate is 22%. Generalized tonic clonic SE requires acute general treatment of the vital functions and consequences of SE. The specific antiepileptic treatment starts with benzodiazepine administered intravenously. If SE is not blocked efficiently by this treatment, intravenous administration of fosphenytoin, phenytoin, valproate or phenobarbital should be used. The last step in difficult cases is general anesthesia.
