Sammanfattning

A long list of new medical treatment options has been introduced in the past decade for patients with epilepsy. The new antiepileptic drugs (oxcarbazepine, lamotrigine, gabapentin, tiagabine, topiaramate) drugs all have different chemical structures, which separates them from the older antiepileptic drugs (phenytoin, carbamazepine, phenobarbital and valproate). None of the new antiepileptic drugs is more effective than the older antiepileptic drugs, but in general they are better tolerated. However, a detailed knowledge of their specific side effects is important in order to ensure an optimal treatment result, and focus should always be maintained on the possibility of chronic side effects, which have been insufficiently described for the new antiepileptic drugs.
