Sammanfattning
G protein coupled receptors constitute the largest family of cell surface receptors and are activated by a range of hormones, neurotransmitters and sensory stimuli. Signaling through these receptors, e.g. the angiotensin II receptor, plays a central role during the progression of heart disease. One group of intracellular enzymes, G receptor kinases (GRKs), turns off this type of receptor. This review focuses on the possibility of affecting such naturally occurring receptor blockers as a novel therapeutic principle in the treatment of cardiac disease.
