Sammanfattning
The aim of this study is to describe
how nurses experience the
encounter with patients suffering
from severe depression, and their
strategies of coping with their
experiences
A descriptive study design with
qualitative interviews was chosen
(1). Giorgios phenomenological
method was employed during the
analysis of interviews (2).
The theoretical framework consists
of: Ethics of care, moral psychology
and philosophy. To discuss
the findings of empathy and
responsibility the authors Levinas(
3), Løgstrup(4), Martinsen(
5,6)),Hoffman(7),Blum(8),)
Nortvedt (9,10,11,12) and Vetlesen
(9,13) were used.
The findings clearly indicate that
nurses are touched by the affective
situation of depressed patients.
They experience a major
responsibility for the well being of
the depressed patient. The emotional
engagement with the depressed
patient constitute the meaning
of suffering as a moral phenomena
and make the nurse act in a
way that can bring the suffering
to an end.
This feeling of responsibility
towards the situation of the patients
seems to make her handle
tendency on the part of depressed
patients to either reject any contact,
or insist on being on very
close terms with her, in a professional
and responsible way. The
emotional capacity of the nurse to
be in a relation with the depressed
patient demands supervision, and
support from colleagues in order
to comply with the accepted standards
of professional integrity.
