Sammanfattning
Microscopic colitis consists of collagenous colitis and lymphocytic colitis, both of which entities are characterized by persistent watery non-bloody diarrhoea with a normal mucosa appearance during colonoscopy and without radiological abnormalities. However, the changes are fairly specific histopathologically. Until recently, microscopic colitis has been considered an uncommon disorder, but in two recent epidemiological studies of well-defined populations in Örebro, Sweden, and Olmsted County, Minnesota, USA, the annual incidence of microscopic colitis was much higher than previously realized and should be considered especially in elderly women with the mentioned symptoms.
