This literature review is on lercanidipine, recently approved for treatment of arterial hypertension in Denmark. The tolerability is good, ankle oedema is observed much less frequently during high-dose therapy and sympathetic nervous system activation is less pronounced. There are, however, more contraindications and interactions than with older dihydropyridines. Lercanidipine may be considered when an older dihydropyridine elicits ankle oedema, but if this is the case, lowering the dose, changing to verapamil/diltiazem or changing to another drug class is preferable.
