The Institute of Rational Pharmacotherapy, attached to the Danish Drug Agency, was established by the Danish government in October 1999. Its purpose is to promote the correct use of drugs by Danish physicians, taking into account efficacy, adverse reactions and price. The main activity of the Institute is the publication of a monthly journal on rational pharmacotherapy which is sent to all Danish physicians. Courses are also conducted for general practitioners with special emphasis on rational therapy. The Institute also cooperates closely with physicians employed by the county authorities in doing academic detailing. Other activities include the maintenance of a national drug recommendation list, establishment of treatment guidelines and review of new drugs and studies.
