Sammanfattning
Introduction: According to the Danish Cancer Plan, rehabilitation should be integrated into cancer treatment. We wanted to study the degree of spontaneous rehabilitation in women treated operatively for early stages of cervical cancer. Materials and methods: This study included 398 women treated exclusively with radical hysterectomi according to Meigs' method from 1983 to 2001. All patients answered a questionnaire that focussed mainly on their sense of past and present illness. Then 100 of them filled out questionnaires SF-36 and SOC to focus on their self-estimated health status. Results: 72% of the women had never perceived themselves as sick, whereas 20% still felt that they were cancer patients. There was no association between the persistent feeling of being a cancer patient and the time elapsed since treatment. The latter patients had lower scores on self-estimated health and energy measures than those who no longer thought of themselves as cancer patients. Discussion: The results of this study demonstrate the potential capability of SF-36 and SOC to identify patients with a need for rehabilitation exceeding their own capacity. Analysis of these patients' responses demonstrates a general reduction in physical, psychological and social functions. These women are obvious subjects for multidisciplinary rehabilitation interventions. Moreover, SF-36 and SOC are potential tools for evaluation of rehabilitation projects for cancer patients.
