Sammanfattning

Introduction: Knowledge about the level of the cognitive, verbal, social and communicative abilities of individuals with Angelman's syndrome (AS) is a prerequisite for an optimal paedagogic intervention. However, there exist only a few descriptions on the social and communicative abilities of children with AS, and none of them has taken into account the differences among the distinct genetic causes. Materials and methods: Sixteen children between 5 and 15 years of age were recruited among the members of the Danish Angelman's Society. They all had a 15q11-q13 deletion. The Mullen Scale of Early Learning was used to evaluate their receptive and expressive language ability and their visual reception. The ADOS-G (Autism Diagnostic Schedule-Generic) was used for diagnostic classification and to determine the children's social and communicative abilities and their use of imaginary and stereotypical behaviour. Results: The children's developmental levels of receptive language and visual reception ability were between 9 and 12 months of age, whereas their expressive language ability was as low as 3 months of age in some. In general, the developmental level was 6 months. Using the ADOS-G, 13 of the 16 individuals scored as having autism spectrum disorders. Discussion: Due to their low expressive ability and relatively higher ability in visual reception and receptive language, we propose the use of pictures and pictograms to be very helpful in communicating with individuals with Angelman's syndrome.
