Sammanfattning
The lethality of ruptured abdominal aortic aneurysm (AAA) is 80-95% compared to 5-6% after elective surgery. However, AAA seldom causes symptoms before rupture. From 1994 were 12,639 64-73 year old men from Viborg County randomised 1:1 for invitation to an abdominal ultrasonographic scan or being controls. Mean follow up was 52 months, 77% attended, and 191 (4.0%) had an AAA. There were 75% fewer emergency operations (P < 0.001), and 67% lower AAA-specific mortality in the screening group (P=0.002). Screening 64-73 year old men in Denmark reduces the mortality of AAA.
