Sammanfattning
The use of alternative medicine
has increased over the past
decade and is expected to continue
to grow even larger in the
future. Nurses need to be aware
of patient preferences for this
mode of treatment and become
familiar with evaluation and use
of this nursing intervention.
The article presents the results of
a research project investigating if
qigong, as the intervention, increases
quality of life in employees.
Qigong is a form of health exercise
rooted in Traditional Chinese
Medicine (TKM). Martha Roger’s
nursing theory was used as the
theoretical framework. Rogers
and TKM both view humans as
energy fields, and have a holistic
understanding of the world. The
understanding of holism in both
theories was found to be compatible
and used as the framework
for the study.
The design of this pilot study was
quasi-experimental with a pre
and post-test on the same group.
The effect of qigong was measured
in term of quality of life in a
sample of 29 company employees
before and after the intervention.
The intervention consisted of
qigong exercise 1 hour weekly for
10 weeks.
An independent t-test was done to
estimate whether or not the findings
were significant. The total
quality of life score was statistically
significantly (p=.01) better
after the intervention. The
respondents reported improvement
in sleep, fewer headaches,
less back and neck pain and
decreased anxiety. The use of
qigong as a therapeutic nursing
intervention was supported in this
study.
